Well, despite the US not wanting this tape even shown to the jury in the inquiry it's been leaked to the public.

I can understand blue on blue hits during a hectic combat situation, but in my opinion this is just a bad call - plain and simple. They spot the orange identification panels, they have serious doubts as to the identity of the targets, nobody is asking for their immediate help but they decide to attack.
They know they've done something wrong the moment the controller advises them of friendlies.
While I have some empathy for the pilots it still seems that when they realise they've just killed a friendly their main concern is for their own future's.
