*Shrugs* I'm always extremely early with my christmas decorations, sometimes the start of December, sometimes two weeks into November, I don't think it matters much, it's up to you, it's like that whole you have to have the decorations down before January whatever it is. It's up to you really. Depends how much you like Christmas, and how long you want it to feel like christmas.

We have the highest Catholic population in the country. We could keep our decorations up all year and no one would care.

I think sometime within the last 2 weeks of November is appropriate but the songs should not be sang till you start on your Xmas Calendar really.
I love christmas songs though. Infact I am off to start a thread about them if one does not exist already.

I have decortions for my own room, and then when my parents want their own stuff up I'm happy to do it for them.

I don't think they should be up til the first saturday of december. It's too early in november. I don't like seeing houses with them up all year either. It's pointless. Christmas is a special time and therefore should not have the decs up all year otherwise it won't stay special.

I usually don't put them up until the first week of December.
One of America's largest holidays happens in November.

Ooooh thanksgiving?
England dont really have many special holidays of our very own like that, cept probably bonfire night but thats not really really important to many people.

Yeah Thanksgiving.
Never understood why it was important. Technically the story behind it is a complete lie.

November 1st '05, 08:00 PM
What, thanksgiving or bonfire night? *looks confused*
Patriot1776
November 1st '05, 08:04 PM
Thanksgiving. Don't know anything about bonfire night
Here;s the story we are told.
The Plymouth colonist settle get hit by disease and start to die-out. (I'll save the details) The Wampanoag Native Americans help them and the holiday celebrates a big meal they had.
Real Story:
At first the colonist were reluctant to meet the Native Americans, but when disease and starvation struck their colony they had no choice. The Wampanoag helped them and the colonist prospered but no meal ever happened. Then the colonists returned the favor by taking their land and killing many of the Native Americans.(Once more I'll save the details.)

England has got a lot of hollidays, just not really on the same scale. Thanksgiving is a bit of an odd one... I mean it seems to me a rather pointless holliday, more of an excuse to have a day off and eat a big meal. But meh, the story from what I know wouldn't really constitute a total holliday. I mean if that story does, think of the many other hollidays that deserve a full blown festival from history... *Shrugs* And according to my friend, who is Canadian, there are two Thanksgivings... One for Canada, and one for America.... Why not both at the same time? Meh I don't know enough to make too much of a criticism.

I think the biggest thing in America is that with the exception of Independence Day and Thanksgiving the only large scale holidays are religious holidays.
In fact if you want to get technical Halloween,November 1, and November 2 are all religious holidays.

Another religious holiday destroyed by commercialism.
Same with Valentine's Day

They all are at this stage. Except the really small ones.

November 1st '05, 08:17 PM
Easter actually isn't that bad. Sure it has commercialism, but it's not like Christmas where people have forgotten the real reason we celebrate it.
And then you have today(All Saints Day) and tomorrow (All Souls Day) which the Church considers more important than Valentine's or St. Patrick's Day

but halloween has truely lost its meaning. It originated from people visiting graves and stuff, but suddenly it came about that everyone dresses up and carves pumpkins and ask people for sweets and money.

St. Patricks day doesn't actually deserve to be a religious holliday. It's such a pointless story.

The dressing up part has always existed. We get that from the Celtic festival of Samhain(So-Wan) Halloween originated when the Christian missionaries realized that the only way they could convert the Celts would be allowing them to celebrate the same holidays with a Christian twist. Thus Halloween,All Saints Day, and All Souls Day were born.
In fact The Christmas Tree, The Christmas Wreath, and the Miseltoe(?) Were born when they combined Christmas with the Celtic festival of Yuletide.
And St. Patrick was one of the men who played the leading role in converting the Celts.

Of course that all led to the 100 Years War,but that is besides the point.

St Patrick didn't do much that was all that special. Here he is only really recognised for the two stories. One being the snakes(Load of crap as far as I'm concerned) and Clann Lír.
