I don't know about this one, I mean bad as it is, it will happen no matter what the limit is lowered to. Here it's 18, and that's alright, most teens don't start until about 15/16, so they aren't too far under the age limit, but I think 21 in the states is too high, not because people should be allowed to drink at a younger age, but because making teens wait so long is just an incentive for them to drink more, teens like to push the boundaries, see how far they can go before trouble happens, it's only natural.

I'm not exactly sure where I stand on that issue. Personally I feel we should follow the drinking laws, but sometimes I wonder if the drinking age is to high. I mean, at 18 they allow you to choose your nations leaders and they allow you to drive, yet they don't seem to think you are responsible enough to drink. I've never understood that.
I feel that as long as the driunking age is reasonalbe it is okay. If there is one thing history has shown us it is that outlawing alchohol only makes the situation worse.

Well you can drink alcohol from a very early age if you are with your parents or have been bought it by an adult.

I drink and am only 16 and I think 18 is reasonable even though I'd like to legally drink I dont think it would be right to lower the age
Haunting_Echoes
November 3rd '05, 04:19 PM
I wouldn't lower it from 18, because that's a fairly reasonable age. Most teens drink below the limit, but if it was any higher then they would probably start drinking earlier. The majority of teens drink too much, and before it's legal. I don't think you will ever change that, but why change a system that so far works quite well.

Although you can't buy a gun until your older over here. There isn't any age lim it to owning one.
I think 18 is a reasonable age.

Well over here it's legally to drink under 18, but you can't actually buy the stuff unless your 18.
I just hate it when all the 14/15 year old's are drinking cos they think it's 'cool'

November 4th '05, 10:53 PM
the age 21 limit is completely stupid.
I dont think they should lower the age 18, as people like to do something when there not supposed it, therefore 14 years olds drink now when there ment to be 18, so if they loweered it to 16, you would get younger kids wanting to try it out, its just wrong.....not that i dont underage drink, my mum gave me alcohol from the age of 7, and my dad gave me lager when i was 1....i have photo proof!
Pearson
November 6th '05, 09:09 PM
There's no way to law an minimum age for drinking. IMO is down to maturity, There's 15 year olds that are mature enough to drink, and there's 18 year olds and older that arent. So its difficult but yeah, 18 i think is the right age. But i think gettin some1 dun whos underage and drinking responsibly is wrong. Anyone that abuses alcohol should be punished, regardles of age.
*Jess*
November 6th '05, 09:12 PM
I think Im mature enough to drink, because I know all the dangers of binge drinking and other drinking dangers, and I wont drink too much of it. I refuse. I just drink now and then, socially.
Pearson
November 6th '05, 09:14 PM
well then , IMO thats perfectally exceptable, even though your underage
Brianna.
November 6th '05, 09:14 PM
As I said earlier, I drink, but I'm responsable. I'd never drive while I was under the influence, and I have really good self control while I'm drunk.
I've been drinking for about two years, and I'm only 17 now, so yeah.
*Jess*
November 7th '05, 08:16 PM
Yeah, as pearson said, it all depends on maturity. So if you dont make yourself stupid when your drunk and you dont drive or anything, your fine.

Yeah all the people in my old school are always on street corners drinking. It doesn't do them any favours, and to me they're just acting more like kids than grown up as they seem to think they are.

should the age be made lower ? I'm against underage drinking and the fact that people seem to think it's cool is just weird. o_O
Also, I seen on the news the other day that it's legal for kids the age of 5+ to drink in their own homes legally. (Something like that) - I think that's sick :|

Hmmm...drinking isn't stupid if you know your limits, being at a level when your just jolly is fine, any more than that things can get a bit dangerous. I agree with the age being lower, you dont get many things happening in Germany (16) or Spain (12). I admit, I'm 15 and I drink sometimes, I never let myself get too drunk in a place where things could happen.

Yeah mabye, if you cant take your drink, I have drank a few times before and I know once tipsy I can still keep control. I'm not a lightweight either, it takes quite a bit to get me drunk. It fades a bit, but I decide before if I'm going to get to drunk and it usually works.

Drinking is fine, getting drunk is fine every so often, everything's fine depending on whether you're prepared to face the consequences really, if you think about it. Alcoholics have a big problem, but then everyone has problems they find it difficult to get out of. It's just life.
Drinking age should stay 18, but if they need to be stricter just crack down on ID. Loads of people I know just use each other's, and it pisses me off simply because I miss out on loads of good nights by not doing it and yet I really wouldn't want to get the person I'd borrowed it from fined or myself fined or whatever.
But I'm glad I've waited till I'm 18 to go to all the more popular clubs n bars cos it'll be more fun when I do go, then. It's just a bugger the whole of my school year turned 18 before me, cos I'm like the 2nd youngest I think. It makes me sad cos I really do feel like I've missed out on loads of nights with my school friends.

RIGHT everybody stop. Maturity requires the ability to see both sides of the situation.
Yes, drinking alcohol is bad for the health etc. The statement that no good can come of it is wrong, because only God knows how one event affects another.
Non-drinkers need to learn to understand just how badly some people are affected by their own inhibitions and inability to feel comfortable around other people. Alcohol may not be a solution to this but in the short term at parties etc when one wishes to not be worried about this problem, it helps. And why not? As long as it isn't abused, it's fine.
Debating is all well and good as long as you ACCEPT both sides before you begin.

not everyone in the world is going to agree with you all the time.
and its not just about this issue, its about life in general.
you need to learn how to accept what other people think.
I understand and accept that people have different opinions.
I never once said mine was more correct than anyone elses.
I never said people SHOULD agree with me.
I never said people weren't entitled to their own DIFFERENT opinions.
I am more than willing to accept other peoples' points of view, I just don't intend on agreeing with them for the sake of doing so.
And I too have reasons for calling people such things.
I don't do it for the sake of doing so, that is just stupid.

Its like someone saying "Oh, no i dont like chinese food" without even trying it first.
I have sympathy for what its done to your father, but for gods sake, stop sitting on here whinging about it and go try it, and then people will respect you more when you come to judge it.
I don't need respect from people.
People who don't listen to an opinion because you're not stupid enough to try it out in the first place aren't the people I want respect from.

you need to learn how to accept what other people think. Well that argument's pathetic, she didn't directly call anyone an idiot as far as I can tell. She said anyone who drinks is an idiot. In similar vein, to anyone who takes drugs is an idiot. Anyone who commits suicide is stupid. She backed it up with reasoning, you seem far more insulted at a group of people being called stupid then countering her arguments.
I do not drink, I have no intention of drinking. Health benefits gained from it are minimal, and I have a good, strong personality without having to drink. It does not enchance me socially, as I would simply be worried all the time that I was not in full control of myself. Nor do I need it to alleviate stress. The negative effects far outweight the idea of small health benefits.
(If anyone responds I might take a while too, exam season and all)
p.s. Emma, that last post was hypocritical. You just agreed with Fez who said "drinkin alone is retarded. drinkin and havin fun is not idiotic at all", you seem quite happy to agree with the insulting of a group for the sake of your argument. Hmm, i dont approve of drinking under the age of 15/16. At 16 we can choose to smoke/have children (girls) which are both affect our health more than the occasional drink. I think if we can choose to smoke and have kids then we are capable of making our own decision to drink too.
People below 15/16 i think are too young really. Below that age generally people do it to fit in with there friends/peer pressure.
