my 16 year old female cousin from japan has just arrived to stay with my mom for the summer. however, i have been put in charge of being her companion for the summer while she takes some english courses at the local university. we all expect that she'll actually have quite a lot of free time despite the english course. and my mother works grave yard shift so she won't be able to entertain my cousin too often. my cousin will probably spend a decent amount of time with me and at my apartment.

so what the heck do i do??!?!?! i'm a 27 year old male that was raised in the states! the language barrier is a bit annoying but i presume we'll be able to work through that. i mean, part of the reason she's here is to improve her english...so us trying to commuicate should aid her in that. but i just don't know what to do with her...

she's quite shy...i found that out today as i renewed my aquintance with her for the first time in many several years. my aunt, her mom, mentioned one time that she likes shopping...but you certainly can't shop the whole summer away. i suppose she can amuse herself some of the time with tv and the internet (she brought her japanese Windows OS laptop with her).

ANY ideas for advice will be GREATLY appreciated!!!!

Try taking her shopping etc. Have a talk with your family about the best ways of communicating with her as you obviously don't seem to have established any way of doing it so far. Experiment with music and TV and stuff, see what brings out some enthusiasm. She'll become less shy once she feels comfortable with you :)

You could go shopping with her a bit, maybe if you know anyone roughly her age you could invite them along so she gets to know more people..

Talk to her about it, see what she would like and make a list of suggestions of things you have to do in your area.
I'm sure she'd appreciate it, and you may build a bond in discussing it, instead of just taking her somewhere she may not like to go.

ask her what she would like to do
