Key Dates for this are:
17 July 2007 - The shortlist is announced
4 September 2007 - The Award Show broadcast on BBC radio and TV
The Nationwide Mercury Prize exists solely to champion UK music by promoting the 12 Albums of the Year by British or Irish artists. All genres of music are eligible and all albums are treated equally. The Nationwide Mercury Prize is Europe’s Number One Arts Prize in terms of media coverage and influence. The 12 Albums of the Year are announced in July each year with the overall winner of the Prize decided on the night of the Awards Show in September. The music on the album is the only thing taken into account.
This year's nominations for the award are as follows:
Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare
Basquiat Strings - Basquiat Strings
Bat For Lashes - Fur And Gold
Dizzee Rascal - Maths + English
Fionn Regan - The End Of History
Jamie T - Panic Prevention
Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Future
Maps - We Can Create
New Young Pony Club - Fantastic Playroom
The View - Hats Off To The Buskers
The Young Knives - Voices Of Animals And Men
Interestingly the Arctic Monkeys won this last year and are the first band to ever be nominated for the award 2 years in succession, Dizzee Rascal also previously won this award in 2003.
For a preview of all of the bands, take a look on the Mercury Prize myspace site here, (http://www.myspace.com/mercuryprize) or the official site here, (http://www.nationwidemercurys.com/)and click shortlists.
Who do you think should win?
I personally think Jamie T has the best album out of all of those and deserves to win.
