which is your favourite british sitcom?

sitcoms have really gone downhill lately, the good old ones like only fools, porridge, fawlty towers etc are just so much better written that the modern day sketches of the likes of little britain and the catherine tate show, theyre funny, but only make decent one-off character sketches, not series after series!!

the funniest modern comedy in my opinion has got to be alan partridge, he is hillarious, he's such a great character to watch.
i also love the two ronnies, thir comedy sketches are the very best...i think i'll start a seperate thread for them
i recently started watching yes minister - it's really good, i like most old british sitcoms. then there's slightly more recent things like keeping up appearances, that's funny, but too cringey, im not a big fan of dad's army though.

my favourite sitcom has always been only fools and horses, but lately ive been into blackadder.

my top five are probably:

1) blackadder
2) only fools
3) porridge
4) fawlty towers
5) one foot in the grave

this is the order of which they were voted by the nation a couple of years ago on the BBC's 'Best British Sitcom':

let me know what you think...

Ben. I don't know if I can vote on this.

It's one of the toughest decisions someone's ever asked me =|

I love nearly all of them to bits ><

Lol. Good point kaye. I think it's because it's modern, more selective humour.

It's not 'classic', as compared to the others in the list.

I still love it to bits though :D

yeh it's more of a classic sitcom poll, that's all.

i'm not putting partridge in there, so i'm definately not clogging it up with crap like little britain

I voted for Porridge.

Ben
January 16th '06, 09:25 PM
steptoe and son...i didnt think anyone would have heard of it to be honest, never mind would have voted for it

if there are any other classics in particular that lots of people request, i can replace an unpopular one with it

Steptoe & Son was a good classic comedy.

I loved the one where they were going to move into that new house.. And Steptoe ended up making a fortune out of it, lol.

Ben. Can you not change the type of poll, so we can choose our top favourites? lol.

It'd be so much easier =[.

Ben

Since when has Little Britain and The Catherine Tate Show been sitcoms anyway?

The best ever is Only Fool And Horses. I have the box set :D. It's just legendary.

Only fools and Horses is ledgendry. Best Sit com ever. Wouldnt really class the others as great. Were's the office? thats 1 of the most highly rated sitcoms ever, that would be my 2nd.

that should answer your question.

i'm going to try and chage the poll now, so here are the current results:

OFAH - 5 votes
Blackadder - 3 votes
Porridge - 1 vote

who voted for Porridge? - good on you! what do you think to the sequel, 'Going Straight'?

I think Blackadder is brillaint! Its set in lots of different eras which has to be one the best things about it. Gives you more of a varied flavour of comedy. :)

I have yet to find one episode of Only Fools and Horses funny..... :/

yeh, it's great. the four series spread over hundereds of years, highlighting the happennings of the time, in the eyes of Blackadder, who plays a key role in that he is always there when things are happenning in history, and we see what it was like in the different eras, and some aspects are laughed at, some sympathised and Blackadder tends to take the mick out of the things we laugh at today with the knowledge we have now, such as in the episode 'chains' in the second series, when Blackadder goes to the doctor to cure himself of possible homosexual feelings, and rightly predicts that he will be prescribed with leeches.

my god...O_O O_O you have GOT to be kidding. i mean fair enough if you don't like it that much, but it's a bit harsh to say you've NEVER found it funny at all. i mean people have different tastes, fair play, but it IS funny, it's very well written and performed, and we all love it. surely you have found something about it funny, or enjoyed it somehow.
well...

Are you serious? That is unbelievable. OFAH is so British which makes it even better IMO!

Grandad was a fuckin legend.

Ben
February 3rd '06, 10:06 PM
yeh he really was, it was a shame he died towards the beginning of the series

uncle albert didn't get off to a great start but as the family grew to like him, so did we!

some other great characters aswell; Trigger, Boycie, Marlene, Mike (RIP) to name but a few

i'm going to make an OFAH quiz...

You know, I went through a phase of realy bumming them Shane, but I don't like them anymore, they're just not funny.

I went back to my roots, and I'm in love with British Sitcoms.

Sitcom Stack weekends, or whatever they're called, on UKgold. Completely awesome. haha
