hi
this is kinda embarrassing. but i'll be brave and speek.
in a lot of books i read, (which is A LOT,) a lot of girls are getting there periods at 11 and 12. I'm going to be 13 in 2 weeks and i have no sign of one. any way, what are the signs of getting your period? Could my eating have to do with it? I barely choose to eat anyway. I skip lunch a lot. and my doctor said that i'm not a normal weight for my age. I need the help about periods. girls, PLEASE help me!

It could be to do with your eating, when I was under-nourished my periods stopped, and even now they are very irregular because my eating habits are still not ideal, I don't think I've actually had a period in two months. But I know a few girls who didn't get their period until around 13 or 14, so I wouldn't worry about it too much, use a BMR calculator to work out your daily caloric needs and try to increase your eating to that number.

I seriously wouldn't worry about it. I have a friend who didn't get hers until 16. I know someone else who didn't get it until 18.
Enjoy it while it lasts.
Oh, and there aren't really any signs. I mean, there's mood swings, cramps, etc. (all part of PMS) but those are also come and go things that I didn't really start noticing until once I got my period.

What does your weight have to do with it =S Why mention that.
It's perfectly normal. Some people don't start 'til they are 15 even 16.

Leon, weight is very important in relation to this topic.

Leon. Eh eh, girls thread.
I didnt start mine till a good few months after i turned 13, so don't get worried, its perfectly normal, love.
As for your eating, you need to make sure you get the required amounts of vitamins, minerals etc, so it would be a good idea to start taking multi vitamins and minerals, these tablets can be bought from chemists and even supermarkets.

I didn't get mine until I was like halfway through being 13.
Also, Leon, weight does have a lot to do with it. Its all about health, if you're not healthy your body wouldn't have enough nourishment to have the right conditions for a baby, your body also conserves resources such as body fat so they wouldn't be lost in a period.
God.
August 28th '07, 11:18 AM
You should listen, what they're saying is good stuff.
You're lucky anyway, I haven't started mine yet, and I'm 21. :O

Good point Beth. Hmmm... I actually decided I would rather have periods cos it makes me feel human (one method of contraception I was offered normally stops them, think it was the injection). So yeah, I was about to say periods are shit but they have good points.

anyway, isn't 18 pretty unhealthy? I thought that you are supposed to see your doctor if you don't have it by 16 years old. Hmmmm....i'm told to take more vitamins anyway...i don't...but i should...i will tonight though.....
:cyaz:i'll try to eat more too...

I wouldn't say it's unhealthy, it's just a little bit unusual to get it so late, so seeing a doctor at around 16 probably isn't a bad idea.
But you are 12 so you shouldn't be worrying about that :)

i clicked the last topic on health and family and for some strange unknown, unwanted reason i ended up here. curiosity has nothing to do with this. :/
but now that i'm here, why are you in such a rush?

It's nothing uncommon to not have it at 13. I had mine at 10, but sometimes people get them later, some get them sooner, and you're just a late one and there's nothing unhealthy or wrong, and you're doing nothing unormal for it to not come. It'll come eventually, trust me, and when it does you'll wish it didn't.
Consider yourself lucky and enjoy NOT having it. Trust me honey, you're not missing out on anything. :P

You''l probably have other signs of puberty first (pubic hair, breasts, etc).
Your weight could be an issue, really underweight people don't get periods (anorexic people often stop their periods) so you may need to put on weight to be healthy, never mind about your periods. Everyone starts at diffrerent ages, I really wouldn't worry about it :)

i wouldn't worry about it at all. i remember being at primary school round my friends and we were all your age and they'd started theirs and they were bragging about it. then i started and i was like. what the frig would you brag about something painful! (not meaning to scare you about it or anything)
trust me sweetheart you dont want one till your older.

well, i'm trying to gain more weight anyway...i've gained 2 lbs. since exactly last week...but it also does not help that my meds make it so i DON'T want to eat. I try though. That's what counts!

I got mine when I was 13, and i know of someone who got theirs at 17.
I think this pretty much answers your question..
HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN TO EXPECT MY FIRST PERIOD?
It can be a bit upsetting not knowing exactly when your period is going to arrive. Wouldn't it be great if we got a letter in the mail saying that our period would start on March 16th? But we don't. However, our body does give us signs that we are getting ready to start periods. First of all, you grow. You get taller, your hips widen and your breasts start to develop. You grow underarm and pubic hair. The next thing to look for is a whitish mucous discharge from your vagina. This is also a sign that you are getting closer to periods. When you have had this discharge for one to two years your periods will start. When the mucous gets thicker THAT is a good sign.
Remember, girls need to have grown to weigh at least 45kg and have a certain percentage of body fat before they start their periods. Underweight girls tend to get their period later.
Most Brands of Pads, Tampons, etc. have sites with lots of information on them.

Look there are actually no proper symtoms. aaaand why do u want it so much. wen u get it. u might wanna give it bac. oh and it varies for different people. there is no set age and it can take untill u are 16 oh what ever untill it arrives. it might not have anything to do with you eating. and if you doctor says your normal and healthy. then wait. it will turn up eventually.

This is a really old thread, but you're being rather dogmatic so I'm going to respond anyway.
I'll question your source on 8-10 year olds starting before their hips are widening etc. They're very rare if they exist, and if they do exist they almost definitely have a hormonal imbalance. The body controls the system which gives you periods, it's not just a random thing. The body begins the periods after puberty, when the ovules have matured and when your hips have widened and breasts have developed sufficiently to allow you to have a baby. If you don't have wide enough hips, you can't give birth easily. If you don't have developed enough breasts you won't be able to feed your baby.
The 45kg weight is a rule of thumb more than it being impossible to get your periods below that weight. If you weigh too little, your body will often prevent your endometrium developing to conserve nutrients. The period is the shedding of this lining, hence if you don't have a lining then you won't have a period.
It's very normal not to start your periods before you're sixteen, but there are indeed some factors which can affect when you start.

If your BMI is on the lower side, it's likely you'll get your period later, as your hormones need enough body fat to trigger those changes I believe... But don't worry, some girls don't get their period til they're 16 and that's still normal! I got mine when I was 14, the latest of all my friends.
