Come on this is a serious topic, I know lots of people self harm. People on here have even admitted to it, openly, in threads!
Self harm is a very serious thing these days and more people do it than you might think.

i hurt myself, and i do it a lot, i've tried most of the things on lists like that, but nothing helps, everytime i do something and it doesnt work i get more depressed and angrier, thus i hurt myself more and more...and i dont know what to do anymore and it sucks! i dont hurt myself enough to make myself bleed but i leave bruses, and small marks all over my arms.....and i dont know what to do.....:(
Mamfy
April 2nd '06, 12:06 PM
Well, why do you hurt yourself? What is wrong with your life or what is making you depressed?
blazeteendanny
April 2nd '06, 06:16 PM
i dont kno whats wrong, because i'm doing well at schools, i've got more friends than ever, and my mom seems happy, so i dont know whats wrong........:(

sometimes people just get sad without anything paticularly bad happening.
have you tried talking to a counsellor or maybe your parents about this?
cutting, or any form of self injury, is a form of coping, so you are obviously very hurt inside.
everyone here seems really nice and would probably be more than willing to talk with you.
thats a really good list though.

April 3rd '06, 05:01 PM
i guess its up to you because you know the situation best. All i know is that supressing it all and keeping it all to yourself will just make it worse.

April 3rd '06, 07:54 PM
isn't there a confidential student advice centre in your school? if not, you could always go to the head of your form or even your headteacher or any other teacher you trust, and tell them in confidentiality(they are obliged not to break it), and they could give you a referral to see a professional. :)
PrincessAlice
April 3rd '06, 08:58 PM
I've find talking about it worse because it just makes me feel like people will look down on me and judge me
I hardly ever do it anymore because i have somebody who means alot to me in my life now :i heart u
but sometimes when i'm really upset there is nothing else which will stop me from crying or take my mind off whatever is upsetting me.... kinda makes me feel in control.
its worse when i get really angry i just end up hitting things and braking things so i have quite a few scars on my fists
blazeteendanny
April 4th '06, 02:56 PM
i dont feel like i can trust any1 at my school because even though i go to them for help with work or whatever they just ignore me.....
Boy_Wonder06
April 4th '06, 03:04 PM
th ebest way to get advice etc is of friends, and if you feel like self harming tell a friend and they will always help you out, if they dont then come and speak to me, im HERE FOR ALL OF YOU !!! :D
blazeteendanny
April 4th '06, 03:26 PM
yea but like i said...i dont want to depress my friends with them worring about me...i mean i've already had to tell one of my friends to stop worring and that i'd stopped...because he seemed so upset and down for a week after i told him......
clueless

Tommeh!!!
April 5th '06, 11:43 AM

this may sound silli but another thing u can do instead of self harming is to write poems and songs, although it seems stupid and geeky, it helps you loads, it allows you to express your feelings etc. Its the best way i know off apart from smacking a wall in lol.

but what you havnt put in there is the reason why people self harm and "just a fad" or "just for attention" is just the simplest of answers to the problem and often the worst. e.g i have plasters on my fingers because i crushed them in a door before, i did'nt really notice and had consumed alot of alcohol but it numbed the pain of my uncles death. attention doent come into it, but it is a resolution to some people. I havn;t properly slef harmed in about a year but i know what it feels like and why people do it.

I used to self harm, but i feel better now :) I don't know why I just woke up one day and thought to myself 'every minute I'm wasting crying and cutting myself is a moment of happieness I will never get back' and ever since then I feel miles happier. the only time I do feel a bit depressed is after I drink loads of alcahol, so if your depressed, DONT drink! it makes it worse!

...I'm pretty sure I would get a rejection. Why? Because she always saw me as a friend and is scared to see that I like her and will answer back with the some bs line like : 'well..I'm very busy with school and stuff..I don't think it will be possible.'

I think that the main thing for people to remember here is that the people who say rotten things about self harmers are making the problem worse. Its easy for onlookers to say things like that without knowing how it feels to be stuck in that kind of state of mind. It's extremely difficult to get out of. I usually write in my diary or write stories on my computer but other times a person just cant make themselves get out of it, when you're angry you make a point of not doing what you should do.

If a person wants to self-harm and doesn't care about their body, that doesn't necessarily make them an idiot. Apathetic, yes, but not idiotic. Or perhaps neither. Perhaps they're a masochist. Is that idiotic?
This forum is about expressing one's opinion, regardless of whether the staff agree with it or not. The philosophy, "This is a forum to express your opinions freely and openly without fear of persecution...as long as we agree with you," doesn't sit very well with the purpose of an *open* forum.

You're right but still it isn't really encouraging people to tell us when they have a problem if they think they will get negative speculation from other people, I know a few people who have stopped/not started cutting because of help on this forum and it would be great if we could keep it up.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but if we could be a bit more sensitive to the people who need it?

anyway, to all those that have bad things to say on the issue of cutting:
this thread is supposed to help people, thats why its called 153 things to do instead of self harm. that means people post in here with maybe more ideas, thanking for the list or whatever. NOT a debate thread where people can throw in the odd fucktard remark like 'lmao @ cutting people'. This thread is about positive reinforcement, not matters of opinion. if you have a negative opinion that you would like to express, take it to the fucking debate forum and have it out there...and please oh please come up with something more intelligent than 'lol, it is well stupid, why dont they sort it out?'

Why? And I'm not saying I agree or disagree with his opinion, but there is no rule that says one must only speak out on self-harm if they're being nice about it, therefore, he's allowed to say what he wishes as long as everyone else is and it breaks no existing rule.

Thanks for providing some logical sense in this thread. I understand that I will never be able to see into other people's minds, I cannot understand people who cut and I never will be able to do. I see their problems as small and often pointless, I have much more reason to "cut" than the majority of those people do, and for that reason I think it is idiodic. Based on my own experience. Maybe calling them idiotic was wrong, but I think it is an idiodic act.

Thanks for providing some logical sense in this thread. I understand that I will never be able to see into other people's minds, I cannot understand people who cut and I never will be able to do.It's mostly a control issue (or masochism). By cutting, people feel like they're taking control of something in their life, even if it is only a small part of their lives. It's the same reason some people are anorexic.

Maybe calling them idiotic was wrong, but I think it is an idiodic act. This is a common misconception among many. The aforementioned logic is only applicable for people who claim they must cut due to their problems, not that they just want to cut. That is the key. Because by having to cut, they are basically saying, "I have no choice because my life is so sucky." By choosing to cut, they're saying, "I realize my life may not be that bad, but I want to do this, so I will." See the difference?

And NewAbortion, fair enough, I can't really disagree with what you said about my comment at all. For example: On another forum I'm on, a neo-Nazi was banned and I helped organize a petition to reinstate his account. Not only did I do that, but I debated countless times with numerous people, always in his favor. Granted, I hate neo-Nazis, but I still felt he had the same right to be there as did everyone else.

okay i just thought i would share with you the things from this list that were personally recomended to me by mental health rofessionals: (It may help)
1) Drawing on yourself in red marker (make sure it's washable!)
2) Writing (poetry, stories, journal, etc.)
3) Call a friend and ask for company
4) Letting yourself cry (can be very difficult for some)
5) Listening to music (try yo use calm music)
6) Writting letters or email
7) Scream real loud (I LOOOVE this one-just make sure no one is home)
8) Call a Help hotline or your Therapist
9) Talk to someone close to you that knows
or another one is:
put an elastic band around your wrist and twang it agains your wrist untill the urge to self harm has gone away (much better than cutting because there are no scars in the morning and you still feel the pain)

I love this list. There is so many things to chose from here. I'm a recovering self injurer so I find this post really useful.

They're all great ways of helping someone who is Emotional.
I shall forward them onto my Psycological teacher at school when I get the chance, she will be very interested.

The list is great! I'm not a self harmer, (at least, not any more) but I would find this list very helpful when I'm board and in need of ideas to do something. Great stuff!

I self harm. I do it to try and cover up the pain I'm already feeling... Something else to get my focus on. Yes, I regret it immediatly afterwards, but right now its all I can do. Even the list is great, I need some sort of pain set up for me..I'll try focusing on that list though.

don't laugh at that one case, its actually taught by therapists.
For some people who self injure, they do so in order to see blood (thus triggering an endorphin release for the individual).
drawing on yourself in red marker / pen in a manner that resembles the cuts one might make otherwise is a safe way to try to simulate the action without actually having to cause oneself harm.

Yeah, this is actually a proven method. :)

Doesn't work :( My ''adopted'' mom also suggested putting a rubber band on your wrist and snapping it when you had the urge to cut.

Well, It depends on the person right? Not everyone is going to derive the same things from self harm.
It usually helps to first understand what you're feeling before you get to the point of SI. There are going to be different things that help you depending on whether its because of depression, anger, invalidation, loneliness.
As well, there will be different strategies to help you out depending on what about SI gives you the emotional (and chemical) release. Whether thats seeing blood, feeling pain, taking care of the wounds afterwards, seeing scars, etc.

Some therapists suggest shooting rubber bands at your arms as a "substitute" if you really, really, really need the pain-sensation.
It hurts like hell, but it doesn't do damage.

I've got another one - Select "Random Article" on wikipedia (you'll eventually end up on something so random you'll totally forget about how shitty you feel).

That has the potential to be depressingly and hilariously ironic. I wholeheartedly endorse this idea.

You know how you can avoid self-harm?
Stop being a whiney little bitch and realize you're a middle-class white kid with no real problems or cares in the world.
Or maybe you're a poor kid who doesn't know who is father is? You know who else was an orphan? Nelson Mandela and Steve Jobs. Heard of them? Did they say "Oh fuck me" because the world dealt them a shitty hand? No. They grabbed life by the hair, pulled it down, and fucked it like the bitch it is.

To answer the thread - there's millions of things to do instead of self-harming. Everyone knows.
