My mum just got taken in to hospital with stomach problems.
So I phone my dad and tell him my sister needs to stay at his house tonight and he says "I'm working tomorrow...I'll think about it"

The only possibility would be his tone of voice. If he can watch them, that's great but you can do him a great favor by watching your younger sister.
