I'm not expecting many, if any replies to this thread as I doubt many people have seen it, but I'm gonna try my best to get you to watch it.
I just watched it with my housemates whilst eating Christmas dinner (which was AMAZING)
Brick Lane (2007)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0940585/
Brick Lane follows the story of a woman from Bangladesh who following her mother's death at the age of seventeen moves to London's East End in an arranged marriage to an older man. The bulk of the story is set in 2001 against the growing racial tension surrounding 9/11 and the muslim community. For a long time the woman has been dreaming of returning to Bangladesh to find her sister who she left sixteen years ago. However in the process of trying to raise the money she meets a young muslim man who changes her life and the way she views the world around her and they embark on a beautiful love affair.
I hope that hasn't given away too much, but in truth not a great deal happens, but that doesn't matter. The film was nominated for a Bafta and it is easy to see why, it is a beautiful story of clashing cultures, love and family. It is shot stunningly, and a number of scenes actually took my breath away. Its very contemporary and very down to earth.
I think a lot of people will be put off by the indian nature of the film, but its a British film, and filmed nearly entirely in English (there are a very ridiculously small subtitles), but I hope some people see past this, the Indian aspect is inevitably key to the plot, but everyone should be able to relate to its themes.
The end left me breathless, it came as quite a surprise and I'm not going to lie I had a bit of a weep. Its not often I rave about films as much as this, so please please watch it.
