does anyone believe in psychic readings? tarot cards etc?

was speaking to someone about it a few days ago. i can't understand why people believe in any sort of medium that claims to predict the future.

i tried ma best to explain cold reading to her and she still kept on saying 'but then she said blah blah and she can't have possibly known that', she just couldn't grasp the concept.

surely, if psychics were real, an insight into the future or connecting with the dead would be a superpower, one of the greatest things humanity could do. the military would also be involved to hone it as a weapon.

discuss.

my mum had a go at me for being "closed minded" when i told her that it was bullshit and that they always fail to peform under test controlled conditions. my parents are dumb as fuck and it pisses me off that they see me as some sort of outcast for using reason rather than faith (same applies to religious discussions)

i think the fact that people like derren brown (he fully admits that he has no supernatural powers) can do these tricks better than the people who claim to be genuine shows that it's complete bollocks.

the whole thing angers me

seriously mate, i completely know what you mean by the close minded statement. the person told me i was as well. close minded because i've actually taken time to read up on all the methods they use to con people? fuck her.

aye, watched a few videos of derren brown showing exactly what is involved in the whole cold reading process and it was so simple for him to appear 'psychic' to the audience. really interesting to see how people are so gullible.

then again, i say gullible and although that is true, a large number of these people will have lost someone recently and are still mourning, wishing to contact a psychic to get some comfort and closure. this is the part that gets me. mediums and tarot card readers know fine well that they can't speak to the dead yet provide false hope and comfort to genuine grieving people. you must be evil to earn money off peoples emotions like that.

as you said, it angers me too.

A few people I used to hang out with were really into it. I don't believe in it, but it was fun to get free tarot card readings and dream readings and stuff. :}

I own a set of Tarot cards but I don't really believe them, sometimes I use them to make a decision in the same instances where many people would flip a coin haha. Tarot cards are beautiful though, I'd like to design and make a set! Already done about 6 of the Major Arcana and painted a couple of the minor ones in an Art Nouveau style at GCSE. That stuff's cool and artsy.

My mum's had a couple of readings done and I don't really believe what was said, although I'd like to.

I know, that's why I like them too! They're so cool looking. Whenever one of my friends used a certain deck with me, I ALWAYS got this one love card and it had two dragons intertwined with each other. It was so pretty :}

I do too.

I only got them to fake predictions of peoples gruesome deaths though, best part is they usually believed me :sifone:

I don't believe in them, nor any God for that matter, but thats beside the point.

The pic's are very nice though :)

I actually wanted to get a set when I was younger (just for fun, to play around with, because I thought they were pretty) and my mom flipped out on me and called them "evil." Now, this is the same mother who started letting me watch rated R movies when I turned eight and never grounded me, even when I probably deserved it.

Apparently, the reason for this was because my grandmother (her mother) had got into Tarot cards and started getting readings every day - asking what color clothes she should wear for certain events or whether or not she should go grocery shopping on certain days, all kinds of ridiculous things.

Long story short: I never got Tarot cards because my grandmother was a weirdo, and my mother was/is convinced that Tarot cards make everyone crazy.

So...what your saying is, being a nutter is in the family? :Nat:

I like to play around with tarot cards and runes when making decisions.

I dun think many people seriously claim to predict the future, I reckon that is typically the result of insanity or scam.

The future is unpredictable, that is exactly why it makes sense to me to look to outside guidance when making such decisions. It is arrogant to assume much of anything, leave it up to the universe.

I don't believe in it personally but it makes me feel as though my life is far more interesting than it really is for only a couple dollars. I enjoy a good story, so I suppose for me it's largely a suspension-of-disbelief sort of deal.

i'm undecided.

A work colleague of my mums did a tarot reading for her, and it was pretty accurate. But then i hear the bullshit stories and then im like "meh".

read up on cold reading, it will explain everything.

you can't predict the future/reveal fortunes/connect with the dead. that is just something humans can't do.

It's crapped and whoever believes in it is stupid.

Magic isn't real.

I understand why a lot of people wouldn't believe in it. It's very hokey and too paranormal for people who haven't had a first hand experience.

I believe in Psychics, though, a lot of them just try to scam people. The real ones ask you to pay whatever you feel comfortable paying after you get your reading. I'm mostly a believer in it because I'm a Sensitive. I actually just use regular playing cards instead of Tarot-- they work the same and it's funny as hell to watch peoples eyes start buggin' when I tell them something personal. I get a kick out of it.

I believe certain psychic abilities are possible; such as the CIA having telepaths and whatever. The mind is a very powerful thing and we only understand how a fraction of it works.

That being said, if you really had any gifts or talents, you'd be working for the government and not selling your psychic powers on the street like a common whore.

Psychic readings are bullshit, as I've done plenty and know I have no such powers. It's all an art of knowing people

I'd disagree, there- If I had such a talent, I'd prefer not working for the government. Too formal, likely secretive, not my sort of work. I'd really just keep it to myself, or among friends, and live an otherwise normal life doing some normal job. I could see others wanting to make money off of it as well, whether they genuinely can do such things or not.

I don't know about predicting the future, but I do believe in psychic abilities, and the flow of energy. It is a very real thing, that I've got to experience recently, it is not as fancy as people make it to be, but I don't think it's all pure bullshit either.
