...(give your self a big pat on the back)
A long long time ago I came on TF to whinge about some new internet censorship law I didn't like (I forget which one) . My main argument was that if the British people protested against the law the government would be forced to scrap it.*
Everyone laughed at me.
TF's main intellectual heavy weight at the time (the Fuzzinator) said something along the lines of 'he thinks politicians still take notice of the people, how cute, stupid and naive.'
But I think the current situation in Greece validates my position.
Let me explain
A long long time ago the Government wanted nothing more than the UK to join the Euro. Fortunately the Electorate had more than one brain cell between them at the time and easily realised that this WAS A FUCKING STUPID IDEA.
Due to people like you and me being opposed to the idea of the evil Euro Tony Blair was forced to keep the Pound.
At the moment the UK's deficit is very similar in size to Greece’s. So why are we not having to beg money off the Krauts like they are?
The reason is that because we have our own currency instead of a common one we can control our interest rates , which helped us evert economic disaster. As well as this we do not have to bail out Greece just to keep our currency afloat like the Germans are having to. This is why Germany is giving Greece upwards of 30 billion Euros, whilst we are ‘only’ giving them 1 billion Euros ( and we shouldn’t even have to do that ).
So as you can see sometimes people like you and me can prevent the government from making stupid decisions just by protesting about it, and can save the country as a result.
So if your country is ever about to do something stupid, don't feel like you don't have a voice, remember if you protest loudly enough you might change things.
*(this paragraph is largely irrelevant to my main point but I'm really drunk right now so fuck you)
