pretty simple topic yo

rate the last movie you saw out of 10, and give your pros/cons or likes/critiques of the movie as well in a brief summary or point by point format yo. Keep the thread preferably about the most recent of films, obviously the ones currently in theaters

However, if it's a stale movie week/month feel free to review older films as well, it's always interesting to hear people's thoughts on films of the past too

I myself haven't watched too many movies other than The Last Airbender lately yo, and a couple people have already discussed it in the other thread so I won't bother to do so here, I'll just give my score for it, which is a 3/10

the acting is pathetic, and the story not very interesting.

The A-Team

8/10

Being an original fan of the tv series, it didn't ruin it, or overdo any well known phrases etc. and was full of humour.

Worth a watch i guess...especially if you're a fan of Adrian Brody topless, and covered in mud lol

I might be biased though since arnie is in the 1st one, and you can't beat a bit of arnie!

meh 6/7, around that general area
My friend who saw it with me was utterly disapointed, and would probably only rate it about a 4 or 5...so i slightly averaged it haha

Inception 10/10

Original plot, seamless special effects, Leonardo Dicaprio, Marion Colillard.
Very stimulating movie, the only reason I can see someone not liking it is because they didn't understand it.

He really does. He's a great actor. Angelina Jolie is fantastic as well. She knows what she's good at and sticks to it. When I aw she was in Sal I knew I wanted to see it.

Funny People 9/10. Very realistic plot and vocabulary. It was refreshing to see a movie that didn't have the typical move going-ons. It was pretty funny and kept my attention through most of it, but some of it was kind of strange. It also had some hilarious actors in it, but it also had Adam Sandler.

I'm a huge Quinten Tarrintino fan. (Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs)
This is one of his more eccentric pieces, but I always love how he uses chapters to unfold
a story.

Nicholas Cage annoys me so much. If he's in a movie I avoid it.

Good movie when nothing else was on, although predictable. I also have to give it credit since it was made in the '90s.

Nicholas Cage...the guy who can only do one role. Seriously think of his voice going 'ah blah blah blah' literally...and his droopy expressionless face...and apply it to a scene in a film...its works everytime!! HES SO DULL!!! The Rock was good though.

That you have a shit taste in acting talent.

He rarely takes a different role, its pretty much always the same straight faced, monotone voiced character that doesnt want to do things but ends up doing it anyway and blah blah blah, he just doesnt seem to try. Id say someone like Kevin Spacey is everything he isnt....so for a start: a good actor.

ugh not this again. I had a lengthy argument/discussion with a few of my male friends about this when i posted up the photo of Nicholas Cage from the new movie.

He does stick to his guns a lot, because that's what he's good at. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Actors can't all just go for the odd, different roles like Jonny depp. It'd be boring, and then there'd be nobody left to play the ordinary kinda films. Although if your opinion is anything like my friends i was arguing with you're gonna start being all ''don't even get me STARTED on Jonny depp, i can't stand that guy''

But he does have some variation, he just doesn't do it often. In captain corelli's mandolin he is amazing. Beautiful film.

what about face off?? that film was mega! He was excellent in it. Or con air?
Also Vampire's kiss, which is one of his earlier roles. He's very good in that :)

and lol i was going to use the rock as an example, but good man you've seen it. I was only annoyed with my friends who were insulting him because they hadn't seen any of his decent films before they judged him :(

IDK boss I thought he was pretty lol in Kick Ass, though he has played pretty much the same roles throughout the 90s and til now.

Just watched The Book of Eli. 8/10 IMO. I rather liked it, and thought Denzel and Gary Oldman were both awesome.

August 12th '10, 11:59 PM
Yeah they are good films...that doesnt make him a good actor though. :/

I think the whole acting thing should be about variation, especially when you are judging their 'skills'...to go further, he does stick to his guns in his acting roles with the odd change...but have you seen him in interviews and such...the exact same emotionless face and droning voice. I dont hate the guy or will not watch things that hes in...or even let his poor performance mar my viewing...i think think as an observation that he is a shit actor.

For a start, that has nothing to do with acting skill but you cant use someone as extreme as old Depp as an example anyway cause hes just a fucking looney ( i do think hes great though, just too extreme to use in this case). To use my previous example of Spacey, look at his roles, American Beauty, The Negotiator, Seven, The Usual Suspects...the guy can do pretty much anything and he does it really fucking well, he manages to cover all bases really dont you think? there are a number of actors that are extremely versatile and id say thats what makes them a 'good actor' Its not the roles they take on or the films they go for, its the capacity to act and fall into different characters rather than playing the same character that looks, acts and sounds very much like they do irl.

Sean - ive not seen that yet so i cant say. Last thing i saw him in was one of the National Treasure films....dear god they were bad.

Porkloin - *sigh* well done for noticing the words "pretty much" in what i said, your two examples dont really contradict what i was saying either because they are fine examples of his permanent character emotion. dont bother replying if your argument is gonna remain this weak.

Claireapillar
August 13th '10, 12:07 AM
lol yeh the national treasure films weren't so good. But i mean i just didn't love the film more than anything. And childrens films are hard to do i think (even going back to depp which i know you wont approve of, but come on alice in wonderland...wasn't so great. It wasn't bad but it wasn't anything special for me anyway. And willy wonker...ewwww don't get me started on that SHAMBLE of a film)

Yeh i get what you mean with variety. I don't think that's what makes someone neccessarily a good actor, but then again i guess i don't even know what makes a good actor. I think being female doesn't help you know. I tend to find guys attractive, and it sways me a lot lol...although i do this with females too scarily haha

I'm not gonna argue or anything, because like i said when i had this discussion with my friends, at the end of it all, it's not gonna make either of us change our views. So there's little point in it :)

And at least i understand your argument for it and everything. You're not necessarily saying anything that isn't true about THE CAGE.

The other problem is that i find his droney voice reaaaally sexy. So again that sex appeal thing probably adds to it for me, but may not appeal to you :P

i really need to see kick ass.

don't know why yall hatin', the National Treasure movies were cool yo

if you want a bad Nick Cage movie, Ghost Rider is it

anyway, last movies I watched were for my film appreciation class, Batman: Under the Red Hood and The Princess Bride

The Princess Bride was a 10/10 of course, classic film

Batman: Under the Red Hood was probably one of the best animated Batman films IMO, was true to the comic, plus had some kick-ass fight scenes, only flaw was that it's so obvious who the villain is after the first scene, especially if you read the comics yo

edit: actually, you don't even need to read any of the comics, it's hella blatant. Wish the opening scene had been shown through flashbacks instead yo

overall, 8/10

Tommeh!!!
August 13th '10, 12:22 AM
Yeah ive heard i do too. :D

To sum it up my opinion on gauging skill is adaptability and the broadness of performance.

Imagine someone juggling...it would get boring after a while, even if they threw it under a leg once in a while...it would still not be very impressive because it shows limited skill.

now if they were juggling blindfolded with one hand, under their leg whilst balancing a ming vase on their head, cockslapping an alligator and playing the harmonica with the other hand...THAT would be impressive a good indication of skill. (or a realistic juggling performance that is a massive display of skill)

Im not really arguing, i just like to back up my opinions with reasons as to why i feel like that, as people who do this:

nicolas cage is a good actor.
what do u know
and this:

August 13th '10, 01:17 AM
Porkloin, shut the fuck up, noone cares.... And show some respect to the thread we are discussing movies here.

Claire - Yeah i was expecting Solomon to be a bit sortah 'yeaaaaaah alright'...but it turned out to be pretty good....pleasant surprise, its quite a light watch, nothing complicated, just a kinda switch off and watch kinda film.

Legion was terrible, the trailers make it look awesome, so it could have been my expectations that made it so bad for me, but its just...such a weak storyline, the bad guys are PROPER shit and the ending is just....well, i thrust my arms in the air in a 'what???' gesture. :P

The Crazies is not what i expected, but very well done...almost like just another zombie film (they arent zombies though) but they did it good.

Shutter Island...it was pretty predictable, but not in detail so its still rewarding to watch even if you suss it out, a very clever and well done film.

Last airbender 9/10

oh really? Yeah i've heard only good things about this film. The trailer looks pretty darn good too

@Tommeh, thanks for the more detailed reviews :) I wanted to see the crazies when it came out. I think i'll be loaning all them films out when i go to America. Apparantly the library near my boyrfriend has up to date movies to borrow for free, like on DVD! Last time i went to the library near me, they had about 20 titles on DVD tops, and all of them at least 5 years old :( But then i always thought, well what do you expect for free?

I'm very excited by this. Now i can see lots of films that i missed in the cinema and can't be bothered to rent out :) I still need to see American Psycho. I am pretty ashamed i haven't seen it yet, considering it's meant to be an amazing film AND had Christian 'the sex' Bale in it

There's tons of films coming out in the next month or so that i want to see. Resident Evil 3D, Saw 3D, Vampires suck, the expendables, Piranha 3D, The last exorcism.

There's a few that look ok but i'm not sure i'll actually bother going to see at the cinema though, like centurion and legend of the guardians: the owls of ga'hoole.

Also last few films i watched last night:

Moulin Rouge - 9/10 (bit of a girly film i know but i love it!)

The bone collector - again 10/10 it is one of my favourite denzel washington films, i love denzel washington, he has mad skillz!

Bedknobs and broomsticks - i watched it this morning because i was feeling down, now i am very very happy. This is one of my favourite every disney films, so it's clearly got to be 11/10 :)

EDIT: just watched terminator salvation, thought it was excellent, and have no idea why a lot of reviews for it were so terrible. Yeah it's not got much arnie in, that is depressing, and i get that it is a lot different to the normal terinator style, but i don't think that detracted from it's value in any way. Sam Worthington, and Chrisian bale were both very good in this film. Especially Sam, i'm hoping to see him more often in films now he's been in several big titles. I think he's a brilliant actor. Anywho err, i don't know what to rate it to be honest, i think 8 or 9 out of 10.

i reckon about a 6 out of 10. It was good, and the story line was definately different. I love anything about the ocean usually. Very cute film but definately strange, and it's not gonna be one of them kid's films that are that you want to show your children when/if you have them or whatever.

It's really really REALLY bad. I think I laughed maybe once the whole time, but it's made by the fags who made other horrible shit like Meet the Spartans so yeah.

Scary Movie 1&2 were fine due to input from the Wayans bros. After that it went to shit for real.

Scott Pilgrim vs the world was fucking awesome and incredibly hilarious. I give it 8.5/10
Just saw it, laughed my ass off. I'd give it a 9/10.

I find it really funny that none of the girls we went with liked it, but my buddy and I really enjoyed it.I can't fucking wait to see this.

yeeeaaahh, id say they were ok in the fact that they really ripped into the scream films even down to the way people ran. But i still didnt really like them...id say the only one of those films that gave me a noticable degree of entertainment was the 4th...one i think. But generally its all such braindead humour i really cant stand it.
