I really don't see the need for the newbies forum as its just going to end up as a load of very similar threads. I think you'd get to know new people better if they just jumped straight in to posting in the other areas of the site.

Can someone explain what the point of the newbies forum is please?

The point of it is to stop the following happening, you'd post in a topic, someone would reply 'hi, who are you?' or whatever, then you'd basically write your intro thread opening post and take all the threads off topic.

The purpose of the newbies forum is to give newbies like yourself the chance to introduce themselves to the community, it also works as a screening process: the more stupid you sound in your intro, the more likely I am to skip over your posts.
Having said that, stick around, we don't get too many people with "original" thoughts around here.
