This article is about the idea of it but the local news we have been getting suggests it is definitely going ahead, I will find the newer article when it is posted on the Manchester News website

There is going to be a law stating that alcohol will have a minimum price of 50p per unit, the government plans to trial it in Manchester. What are peoples thoughts on this?

The idea behind it is to reduce alcohol abuse and alcohol related crime / problems
Personally I do not like it for two main reasons:

1 - It will be more expensive for socialising, being a student a lot of our social life does revolve around alcohol, going out clubbing etc and most of us are poor enough as it is! Not only will there be an increase in costs for pre drinks, drink prices in clubs are bound to go up so they can pass the costs along to us consumers. (Kinda selfish I know :p)

2 - The second reason is more of a economical one. It is bound to discourage people from going out to social venues meaning they get less custom and could potentially go out of business, whilst this is not the case for many of the bigger venues, small pubs, hotels which generate profits from bars etc will be hit hard. Smaller shops eg off - licenses will also get screwed over. Members from the local universities are saying its crazy to hit peoples spending during a recession

On some drinks the price increase will be dramatic, take cider for example on average it will have at least 10 units per 2 litre bottle and costs between £2-4 with the new law it will go to a minimum price of £5 potentially doubling. Hitting people on lower incomes harder in the pockets than those of a better financial standing.

The cider was used as an example beer, wine are also going to be hit heavily. Also cider is served in pubs / clubs, used in mixers snakebite anyone ? To quote the article a minimum of £6 per 6 pack of lager and a minimum of £4 a bottle of wine.

Yes its true that "poor" people who are on dole should not be spending all their money on getting drunk, but noticed how I said "low income" by this I mean people who are working but still have a lower standard of living compared to others for example people in full time jobs that pay minimum wage.

Like Sebbie said, what about people like me- young and living away from parents, no longer to be able to afford to go out once the bills have been paid? If this goes through I'll be gutted.

Maybe this would not be a problem if you spent more time figuring out how to not be poor as hell and less time drinking ? ? ?

Sounds like an ignorant statement right there, I work full time and pay all my bills- why shouldn't I go out drinking a couple of times a month?

I spent my dole money on boozing down the pub, was good times shouting "CHEERS FOR THE DRINKS EVERYONE"

Even at college and a shit part time job I could afford to go out and drink. Hell they'll be a way around it, everyone'll just do drugs instead, so much cheaper.

As for a revolution I don't really think it's very British as such, I think we should all write angry letters instead addressing our disgust in the government making it harder for us the binge drink.

Wait soo it'll be 10 pound for 2 bottles of cider. Had anyone been to clubs recently it's like 5-6 pound for one. Also this means I'm just gunna spend more money getting battered
