does this have something to do with the 'spanish cucumbers'? I heard something about that a few days ago.. I dunno I also don't care.

They thought it was, but the strain has been tracked down to somewhere else, don't remember where though. I was listening to NPR and one of their reporters said it could be an "artificial" strain made by some cell because it's the first of it's kind. Still too early to tell how the situation might turn out in my opinion.
Addendum: Looked up the outbreak on Google, and this article came up. Don't know how accurate the sources are, but it makes sense to me.

If the media aren't using one thing to try and put you off your food, it's something else.
Mind you, I wouldn't fancy getting food poisoning either.

*singing* (to tune of we are the champions by queen)
we're always the targets
we evoke lots of fear
bombarded with chemicals, ph, gamma rays to make us disappear
but we're naturally occurring
nature pulls our reins
and when there's trouble we mutate into really virulent strains
chorus : we are the microbes my friend
and we'll keep dividing till the end
we are the microbes
we are the microbes
no time for chlorine
cos we are the microbes in your food
we'll mess up your kidneys
G.I damage too
we go by the names of clostridium, e.coli, salmonella
to name just a few
and we like sprouts and lettuce
salami and stew
you'll find us on chicken, soft cheeses and hamburgers too!
repeat chorus..................

I now have a valid excuse for not eating cucumbers anyway.

Didn't they say yesterday that they now think beansprouts are the cause?
Who the fuck even eats beansprouts anyway?

I like cucumbers and often have them with salad. I like chestnuts, but I've not had water chestnuts, nor have I had beansprouts. (Though I have had sprouts)
