Starring: Tom Cruise, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Michelle Monaghan, Ving Rhames, Laurence Fishburne.
Director: J.J. Abrams
Certificate: UK-12A, USA-PG13.
The Plot:
The film starts with Cruise's character strapped to a chair with Hoffman's character pointing a gun at Cruise's girlfriend. Then we get the title sequence, followed by the rest of the film which is set a few weeks before the opening scenes. We gather that Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is now engaged to Julie (Michelle Monaghan) who knows nothing of his secret life as an IMF agent, albeit now only a training job, however he is called upon to rescue someone who he trained from certain death at the hands of a dangerous terroist, when this operation goes awry, we get one of the most memorable action thrillers of recent years...yes, i liked it :)
Whats Good:
Action overload, the film is almost constant action from start to finish, but unlike other films that concentrate on the action but have no plot, this is the opposite and has a very engaging story to go with the excellently choreographed action sequences. The ambush scene on the bridge, is one of the best and most exciting moments i have ever seen in the cinema, easily rivalling the bank heist in Heat or the car chase from Bad Boys II. Unlike the first MI, this is fairly easy to understand on the first viewing, and it is much better than MI2 (not that there was anything wrong with MI2, because i loved it). The acting is also very good, and the special effects were excellent.
Whats Bad:
Not very much to be honest, the only things that i noticed that i didnt like were the way that they showed something that was fairly close to the end right at the beginning, meaning that the rest of the film was basically a flashback, and made the film less tense than it could have been had they not showed this major event right at the start. And the only other thing that i can think of was that the music used in the film seemed fairly familliar, anyone who has watched Alias or Lost will notice that some of the music (not the MI tune however) sounds like it has been lifted right out of those shows, although i suppose that this can be expected considering that JJ Abrams was the director (he's the creator of Alias and Lost incase you didnt know).
Conclusion:
A brilliant film, and one of the best action thrillers i've seen in years, a true summer blockbuster in every sense of the word, go see it...NOW!
9.8/10O_O:)
