View Full Version : Glasses and stuff

Hi, I am Kathy from Israel.
I have a very childish problem, but it bothers me.
Last week, after the end of the school year me and my mum went to the optometrist and he told me that I need to wear my glasses full-time. (yeah right, I don't even wear them at home full-time).
I wear glasses since the 7th grade (I'll be in the 11th next year). When I was in the 7th grade the class was against me, like I was the class' geek and every one just liked to bother me, throw things at me and stuff like that, I was scared to tell anyone but my brother about that. He was the only one who helped me. In the 8th grade I started using my glasses at school because the teacher set me at the end of the room, it was the worst year, my brother went to the high-school (I was in the junior-high) and no one could help me.
Lat year I went to the high-school and everything was just fine, I was sitting right in front of the board and didn't need my glasses to see, in fact no one in the totally new class knew I need glasses at all, maybe except a girl that wears glasses herself. I was all the time hanging with my brother's mates (and even had a boyfriend). As my vision got worse I started use the glasses for the computer all the time and wear them at night. The last month of the school I started using them more and more to see from the first row, in addition I started taking the driver lessons and the driver teacher told me to check my eyesight because it was 20\40 with glasses and it's the minimum for driving. In the class some boys started to bother me, I think it's because of the glasses...
Now my brother and my boyfriend are going to the army and I will see them only once a week, and I have no one to help me in the school...
I asked my mum about the lenses and she told me that there's no way she will buy me and she don't want me even thinking abut lenses with my "allergic-eyes". Now I am trying not to wear them at all, maybe only for TV, I am about 8 inches far from the screan now and still is blurry because of my astigmatism. (I am about -2.5 and about -1.5 cylinder that apeared risently, last year it was about 0.25 so I didn't wear a corection for it)...
Please help....
Brianna.

Have you ever considered contacts?
Chris
June 30th '06, 04:21 PM
Yeah, definitley think about contacts. I have them myself (i've got glasses, but like you i refuse to wear them, lol). As for your mothers excuse about lenses irritating your eyes, that is a load of bull shit, just get eye drops if you decide to go for the lenses route.
They irritate you at first i'll admit that, but you do get used to them, just give them time. If you really want to be sure that they wont irritate you (in the long run) go and see your Optician and ask him if your eyes are suitable for lenses, that should stop your mum using that excuse on you.
However, lenses are expensive (which is probably the real reson why your mum doesn't want to buy them for you), at first you should have "One a Day" lenses, and work your way up to a pair of full time lenses. These "One a Day" lenses cost around £30 a month (dont know what that is in Israeli money though).

get contacts. and if your mom doesen't let you then just wear the glasses. your eyesight is more important than what people think, and thats pretty immature if they're still going to make fun of you for wearing glasses when they are in grade 11.

It's expensive here, and little more than £30 a month. I think my mum just want me to go on the safer route of just not seeing... my brother thinks I am stupid because I am trying now a method of vision improvement... not wearing glasses and doing some exercises... I will start tomorrow, it sounds quite good....
I am afraid of lenses myself...
Thanks anyway.

I am making fun of myself just by breathing... no one likes the way I think, the way I dress, the way I act... the way I am.

Tell them to eff off, then. You live for no one but you. Don't worry about what other people think of you. You're not going to know your classmates in like...3 years. Just focus on you and what YOU want for yourself, not what everyone else wants.

yeah briannas right. not wearing your glasses now may seem like a good idea, but 5 years down the road when you're eyesight is crappy you will have wish you had. Everyone in highschool is insecure, no matter how popular or pretty they are, so making fun of someone else is a way to make themselves feel better.

I am trying but some people are too annoying. We are not the best school in the world, especially no my class... but I am trying...
Thanks a lot ppl!!! You are so supportive!!!

I know they're annoying, but it gets easier. I used to be picked on soo much. It was horrible. One day I decided to tell them all to eff off and get a life, and I've been MUCH happier.

If you can't get contacts, wear your glasses. Like Lindsy said, your eyesight is more important than what others think of you. Don't apologise for your being---tell them to get lost. You need specs so wear them. Look after yourself. There's a saying that i'm reminded of now that has a lot of truth in it, and it goes something like this: If you run around trying to please everybody, you will never succeed because there will always be somebody who will not be satisfied.
Be yourself and be proud of being you.
Maybe you could get some stylish glasses? :)

Thanks, stylish glasses don't fit me because I'm kind of not stylish girl, I don't like clothes that show half of my body.... or so....
I prefer wearing mine then waste money on realy good and stylish glasses that even if they'll fit me I'm not sure I'd wear them, maybe only for TV.
Thanks anyway.

For TV I am using them, but not for the computer and reading... and I think of trying to sit even closer next year... like o move the first row little closer to the board...LOL
For driving I would wear them, I cant see anything when I drive, and 20\40 is not so good for learning to drive, I am driving quite slow because I am afraid...
Thanks.

Youth you've got to wear your glasses for driving. Thats just plain stupidity. No matter how daft you look its not worth risking your life is it, and thats not over exagurating...It could cause you your life.

Hi,
I just visited the optician, and she said that I'd better not wearing lenses, because I have too sensitive eyes. This is so depressing…. I don’t want to wear my glasses…
But on the other hand she said that I don’t have to wear glasses full-time, because wearing or not wearing glasses have nothing to do with vision worsening. In addition she told me that I can use lower prescriptions if I want to… this is so good………. But I don’t want glasses.
I am still thinking about trying soft lenses without the astigmatism correction, but I’m afraid… I can get infections or so…
I’m in kind of dilemma…

Sorry to hear that Kathy, but if your optician says it could give you infections if you wear contacts, its probably not worth it.
The infections could lead to serious problems with your eyesight, and if you think about it i'm sure you'll agree that seeing as you can now is better than not seeing at all. I'd advise you to take the advice of your optician.

I've worn glasses since I was 5 years old. I started off with my eyesight being about -0.25 like you. I wore them on and off when I needed them. Now, don't get me wrong, but those kids who bully you for wearing glasses are the idiots. But you giving into them means they win.
People have said things to me when I was little, and I get really hurt by it, but as with anything else of this nature, your health is the thing which really matters, so why bother even respeonding to those idiotic kids? It sounds harsh, but it's true. People call me sometimes, even for being who I am, but there's no point getting yourself down about it, because you are who they are, and until they can accept that a visibility disability is something you have, then they are the loosers.
Nowadays, my eyesight is -6.75 in each eye, and those of you who know about vision, know that that's pretty bad. But it's part of me. I wear contact lenses and I wear glasses, depending on how I feel that day. I don't mind either way.
It's a shame if you can't wear them, but nevermind. Because there's nothing you can really do about it, as eye infections can leave you blind.
So if I was you, I'd stand up for myself, weat the glasses and tell the other kids where they can shove their petty insults and sneers. Show them that you don't give a shit what they say, and you need glasses to help you. Show a little backbone!
Plus the fact, by you not wearing them, the more you're straining your eyes, the more you're gonna need them. Lol.
Trust me on that one.

Nothing wrong with glasses. I wear them most of the time in school to see the board, ect. Now, at that age I'm sure why anyone would make fun of you for something like that (as opposed to something more substantive), but in my case, there's a general understanding (not that there needs to be, since glasses or contacts are damn common) that if anybody fucks with me, I'll rip of their head and kill them.
Besides, look at it this way:
Ghandi - Had Glasses
Hitler - Didn't have glasses.

I have a gicky reputation at school and people treat me as a gick, glasses make me even more gicky and less confident. I've tried to change but there always was something to change me back... This year there were my glasses.
Once, in the 9th grade, my brother told me about the "superman effect", I don't remember that philosophy, but it worked on me for about a month... Oh, now I can't remember what it says...:angered: :x:

My mum just try to force me to wear glasses full-time, I don't feel I need them, my brother just defends me (like he always did) and at school it would be very hard to be more confident, I just considered there as a gick and it's very difficult to change.
Somehow I feel that joining the basketball team would add a lot.... my mum said that we might give a try for soft lenses :) not because I feel inconfident with glasses, but because glasses suck when you play basketball:).
The saddest thing is that I can't join any team right now...:angered: F*ckin' Terrorists! F*cking war! (and my bro is going to be a soldier and in three months they may send him to the war... Hope it'd be over very soon, but it doesn't look so:angered: ).

I wear glasses myself and frankly I look better with them on instead of not having them. First off for any high school kids to be making fun of someone for having glasses is really immature on their part. When I first got glasses I had to start wearing them all the time I thought that people were going to make fun of me too and some did for a little while but I felt a lot better because I had less headaches and I could finally see the board again. So forget about the immature little people and focus on your school work. As for your brother and your boyfriend. You will see them once a week so once a week they can go and kick some peoples butts for you!!! :-)
