{ I have now been filmed for a documentary which will be aired on TV }
I'm 17 years old and have type one diabetes which you can find out more about here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetes_type_1)
Trying not to go too hard on the sugar as a Diabetic sugar free products sounded like a good idea. Still being able to have all the sweetness.
I started having sugar free products when I was very young around 9years old. When I was in year 6 at school I noticed that for some reason I was getting anxious and was having bowl/stomach pains, strange behaviour, loss of attention, memory loss, phobias and food cravings and much more.
When I got into high school this was taking its toll on me socially, physically, and was effecting my education. The pains I would get were terrible and always at the wrong times. I didn't like going places and preferred to stay at home, I lost a lot of days off school.
I ended up dropping out of school after year 10 finished which was my own choice as I wanted to do TAFE. At this point I was in a terrible state I felt like I was dieing every day I was aggressive and lost friends. I had already gone and seen a doctor who told me I had IBS which stands for irritable bowl syndrome which is like a vicious cycle.. you worry about the pains happening so they happen more. (It's caused by stress.)
I was just fed up and couldn't take it anymore so I tried really hard to find a "cure" to this IBS thing which was only one of my problems. I didn't find anything.. but what I did find was a site that said IBS and diabetes.
The site didn't have much on it just a little blurb about managing diabetes and IBS... but it made me wonder WHY having diabetes would increase the chance of having IBS.
I then thought of sugar free products and it just clicked so I grabbed a can of diet coke and looked at the ingredients. There was nothing unusual at first glance but then I saw this phenylalanine thing which I put into google which then led to me finding out about Aspartame. (Australian products with aspartame inside will state "contains phenylalanine")
One quick google search about Aspartame and it was controversial broken loose. Hate sites, doctor sites, government sites covering up the truth. Apparently my heath could of actually got worse than it already was. From brain tumours to death.
I then cut all sugar free products out of my life which was mainly sugar free chewing gum and diet soft drinks.
Within a week I started getting my heath back... It's like I lost 5 important years of my life to aspartame and I wish I could have them back with full health.
Hitting almost 1year without aspartame now and no longer have IBS, (which is "incurable") have perfect health my brain chemistry has returned to normal and I'm feeling great!
Products to avoid are ANY sugar free product, if its not real sugar... stay away. Take note that most chewing gum is sugar free.
I would love to hear what you have to say about this =)
