Someone help!
Okay so i attend a predominately white school. and our english teacher, being as dumb as she is, assigned slave narratives as an assignment. Everyone had to pick a slave and read their life story. Well the problem is, some of the narratives had the n*word in them and the teacher ALLOWED the students to read that word OUTLOUD in front of the class. Well this one kid did it and since hes white all the black kids are REALLY mad.. Even though the teacher gave him permission! whos in the wrong here? the teacher who said it was okay, or the students who did it? I think the anger should be the teacher but ehh who knows!

Re: someone help!
I remember doing that at school and we had to say the words, one time was when reading "Of mice and men".
Its done to read a historical quote or whatever to experience it as it is.
And I'm no racist or whatever and I believe saying degrading things to people is wrong as it is with anything, As long as its quoting something to see the true value, and not actaully aiming it at anyone in the room then there should be no problem. If it was done otherwise it would be changing/denying historical facts for "political correctness" and I do not agree with that.Last edited by Bob! : March 10th '06 at 08:08 PM

Re: Someone help!
i'd say its both of their faults to be honest, the teacher gave the kid permission to use such offensive language but the kid did have the choice to not use it... so theres my answer

Re: Someone help!
Personally I think all this is stupid, the whole drama that surrounds that word.

Re: Someone help!
Aye, if its aimed at someone and they take offence then fair enough.
But especially if its just used as part o learning and actual history or whatever than its just silly making a massive fuss, specially if no one takes offence.

Re: Someone help!
Also banning one set of people from saying it, but tolerating another is racial discrimination, e.g racism in itself is it not?
So if people want this word stopped then ban EVERYONE from saying it, cause if not its being racist to whites and anyone else who get punished for saying it when blacks walk about calling it each other all the time.
Also I dont think its actually a good word either and would not like sumone using it actually against someone as I've said, but still its part of our past, and teachers need to teach that past, as long as they dont aim it at anyone or make fun of somone through it then they are not in the wrong.

Re: Someone help!
Literature is literature. Its like art, you can get away with it. We were allowed to use horrific words in our english lessons, such as 'see you next tuesday' and the n-bomb, and **ck. Because the words were put there to shock, and unless you say them, you wont be shocked. And in other cases, words were there because they were acceptable. People should recognise that in some days and ages, racist slurrs were commonly used and acceptable. Its not ok to sweep it under the carpet.
However, as stances have changed, its not acceptable to use the words nowadays.
