Re: Political Correctness gone too far?
PC has definitely gone way too far, i mean, it's as if they're scared of any slight possibility that someone could get offended by something (which would be ludicrous anyway - it's not as if i would get run off crying if my class had to sing 'baa baa white sheep') and they're trying to completely cut out the possibility of someone being offended by anything, without waiting for something to happen and then to act upon that, they've just tried to cut it out before it starts.
some important quotes from the article bob linked to:
- Instead of singing “Baa baa, black sheep” [written in 1744] as generations of children have learnt to do, toddlers in Oxfordshire are being taught to sing “Baa baa, rainbow sheep”.
- “Baa Baa, Black Sheep has been one of the most well-known nursery rhymes for generations. For people to come along and fiddle with it is ridiculous. What on earth is a rainbow sheep anyway? “I’ve spoken to other parents about it and none of us has ever heard of anyone getting offended by the words ‘black sheep’.”
- In 2000 Birmingham City Council tried to ban the rhyme, after claiming that it was racist and portrayed negative stereotypes. The council rescinded the ban after black parents said it was ludicrous [that anyone could find it offensive]
there's no such thing as a rainbow sheep, so why are the education authorities teaching this in schools?
I've heard of other examples too, like that teachers can't call any child 'Cheeky Monkey', it's no longer a blackboard (despite its physical colour, and note that whiteboard is still 'whiteboard'), you can't say 'Christmas Lights', they are now 'Winter Lights', you can't say 'Merry Christmas', you have to wish somebody 'Seasons Greetings' despite the huge light displays in Sheffield City Centre exclaiming 'Happy Eid' and 'Happy Hanukkah'.
No-one could get offended by hearing the song 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' and anyone who takes offense is being ludicrously ridiculous
