Anyone Else Do A-level Maths?
I'm doing AS Maths this year, finding it really hard, only just coping with it. Managed to get and E (49%, almost a D) in the C1 in january, and i've got C2 (and a C1 resit) on monday 22nd may (a week today) and M1 (Mechanics) on the 6th june.
i did the intermediate paper at GCSE and got a B, the only one in my (a-level) class that didn't do higher, which means that i hadn't covered a lot of the work everyone else had, which gave them a head start. also, two out of the three people i sit with do further maths, and all three of them do physics (same as mechanics) so they all have these advantages over me. well annoying.
i doubt very much i'll take this on to A2, probably take AS English intead. i have a lot of work to do for these exams, i know i can get a much higher grade out of teh C1, and i reasonable grade from C2 (if i put a lot of work in now) but i'm really going to struggle with the mechanics, i've got a bit more time, but i ahve a lot of work to do to get on track.
anyone else do/did/intend to do it? what do/did you think of it and all that?

Re: Anyone Else Do A-level Maths?
The thing you need to remember with math is that everything is logical. You learn a rule, you understand it, and then you apply it. It's not subjective to your own thoughts or opinions, it's merely a process - which is why it should be one of the easiest AS courses.
Mechanics is just as methodical - if not more so - than the Pure/Core subjects. Not having done it before - or not having done as much as everyone else - is simply an excuse - a poor one, at that. If you went into the course with every intention of success, then time isn't at all an issue - it's how much you're willing to apply yourself.

Re: Anyone Else Do A-level Maths?
I was going to do it to AS next year, but i did same as you in GCSE and got a B, and the people that did higher in my 6th form anre still struggling. Im deffinately carrying English Language to A2, its really just common sense, and its pretty easy.

maths is aload of crap. most of it u don't need to use in everyday life [algebra]. the only reason for doing A-levels career wise is if u wanna become a maths teacher or rocket scientist.

5th form? is that what they called it back when you were at school in the 70s?

Re: Anyone Else Do A-level Maths?
Most of everything you learn you won't need in later every day life, but the reason you take the subject is to expand your existing knowledge on it. You might think that algebra plays no part in your future, but you should keep in mind that math isn't always text book - it's applied. If you take up architecture, physics, carpentry, mechanics and so on and so forth, algebra - in conjunction with a general understanding of geometry - is essential.

Re: Anyone Else Do A-level Maths?
As logic would have it, 5th form preceeds 6th. This would place the person you just called a paedophile in their final GCSE year; 16 years of age.

Re: Anyone Else Do A-level Maths?
yeh i know what 5th form means. i know a '5th former' would be 15/16, but (and you won't know this cos you only just signed up) we think that guy is pretending to be that age, but is actually like 40 or something. he's posted some really weird stuff. he's really offensive towards members, he's posted porn, and he's a big jackass. he should be banned.

Re: Anyone Else Do A-level Maths?
I sincerely doubt he'd be 40 - most people of that age would be a bit more discreet. Being an ass drags in far too much attention. I'd say he was around about your age, if anything. Beneath 20; older than 16. By no means a paedophile - just lurking to flame a little.
The best thing you could do is block his IP address and his host.
Just hope that no one else on the forum connects in the same way.

Re: Anyone Else Do A-level Maths?
yeh it's alright he's been blocked now. i'm pretty sure he wasn't 40 lol, i bet he was just an arsehole about our age, bored, with no friends and just wanting some attention and to cause some uproar...
pathetic loser.

I'll omit the fact that I tend to do the same thing when I'm bored. Depends on the overall intelligence level of the community, I suppose. There are some message boards floating about (DMB being the first that springs to mind) that are, quite simply: shocking.
Thankfully this board isn't part of the web scene.. so you're safe for now.

Re: Anyone Else Do A-level Maths?
Maybe you should take up English!
You'll discover the most amazing - albeit trivial - things.. say, the fact that 'involving' doesn't begin with an 'e'.
